How is insight different from realisation?
Realisation is the broader category of coming to understand something, which can be gradual or sudden. Insight specifically refers to the sudden form with particular felt qualities including the snap-together quality and the often-pleasant aha experience. A person can have realisations through gradual reflection without the sudden snap that characterises insight. Most understanding develops gradually through learning and experience; insight is the less common pattern where understanding arrives in a moment of recognition. Research has shown that insight has specific neural signatures distinct from gradual understanding, suggesting that the two processes operate through different mechanisms even when they produce similar end results.
