Cognitive dissonance is the sound of growth, not failure
Dissonance happens when two of your beliefs cannot both be right. The instinct is to quickly resolve it by dropping one, often the inconvenient one. A more useful response is to stay with the dissonance. Ask, which belief is better supported by evidence? Which one am I holding because it is comfortable? Dissonance is how the mind updates. People who never feel dissonance are people whose beliefs have stopped being challenged, which usually means they have stopped being curious. Welcome dissonance. Let it do its work. A smaller, truer set of beliefs will remain on the other side.

Cognitive dissonance was identified by Leon Festinger in 1957 and remains one of the most extensively studied phenomena in social psychology (Festinger, 1957). The original theory proposed that holding two contradictory beliefs, or believing one thing and acting differently, produces psychological discomfort that motivates change. Decades of research have refined the theory and identified many specific patterns: how people justify decisions after making them, how attitudes change to match behaviour, how people maintain self-concept in the face of contradicting evidence. Notice when you are reducing dissonance
Most dissonance reduction happens automatically, often through changing the cognitively cheaper element. Noticing when you are doing this, particularly when the cheaper change is also the less accurate one, allows the option of choosing more honestly. The noticing itself is the most direct intervention.
Sit with the discomfort longer than feels natural
Dissonance produces strong motivation to resolve quickly. Resolving quickly often produces less accurate conclusions than sitting with the discomfort and allowing more complete consideration. Building tolerance for sustained dissonance often produces better thinking over time, particularly about significant questions.
Distinguish updating from rationalising
Both updating beliefs and rationalising existing beliefs reduce dissonance. They feel similar from inside but produce very different effects on accuracy. Asking whether you would accept the same line of reasoning if it pointed the other way often reveals which process is operating. Rationalisation typically uses asymmetric standards.
Apply the same scepticism to both sides
Dissonance is often resolved by applying high scepticism to the contradicting information while applying low scepticism to the existing belief. Deliberately applying the same scepticism to both, even when this is uncomfortable, often produces more accurate revised beliefs. The asymmetry of doubt is one of the more reliable markers of motivated reasoning.
Recognise when self-concept is at stake
Dissonance about self-concept is particularly hard to work with honestly because the costs of accepting the challenging information feel personal. Recognising that self-concept is what is at stake, rather than just the specific question, sometimes allows more honest engagement than treating the question as purely intellectual. Significant changes in self-concept often require the kind of work that therapy supports.

Is cognitive dissonance a bad thing?
Not inherently. The discomfort is doing important work by motivating consistency and updating. The same mechanism that drives productive change also drives motivated reasoning, however, which is the less useful side. The question is whether dissonance gets resolved through honest updating or through rationalising existing positions. Both reduce the discomfort, but only one produces accurate beliefs. Noticing which process is operating in yourself, particularly during politically or personally charged topics, allows the option of choosing the more honest path even when the easier path is available.
