The neuroscience involves what is sometimes called transient hypofrontality: temporary reduction in activity in the prefrontal cortex regions associated with self-monitoring and self-criticism, alongside increased activity in regions associated with the specific task. The state is linked to measurable benefits in performance, learning, well-being, and life satisfaction, making it one of the more practically important emotional states identified in research.

Protect sustained uninterrupted time
Flow requires periods of attention not broken by interruption. Phone in another room, notifications off, conversations deferred. The protection has to be real; partial protection rarely allows flow to form. People who structure their days to include genuine focus blocks experience flow more than people who do not.
Calibrate the challenge
If you are bored, the challenge is too low: find a way to make it harder. If you are anxious, the challenge is too high: break it into smaller pieces. Adjusting the difficulty deliberately, rather than just trying harder, often produces flow more reliably than working on motivation.
Start with activities you genuinely care about
Flow is much easier in activities of real interest. Building your life around activities you actually care about, rather than just enduring activities you do not, increases total flow significantly. The investment in finding work and hobbies that genuinely engage you pays significant returns in flow experience.
Develop skill in flow-producing activities
Activities that produce flow at one skill level cease to do so when skill increases unless the challenge also increases. Continuing to develop skill in your flow activities, seeking harder challenges as you grow, maintains the flow-producing capacity of those activities over years and decades.
If flow feels permanently inaccessible
Sustained inability to enter flow, even in activities and conditions that should support it, can signal depression, chronic stress, attention disorders, or other conditions that affect the underlying capacity. Is flow the same as being in the zone?
Largely yes. Being in the zone is colloquial for flow and is often used accurately. The distinction, when there is one, is that being in the zone is sometimes used for any state of good performance, while flow specifically refers to the absorbed state with its particular features (altered time perception, loss of self-consciousness, intrinsic reward from the activity itself). Most uses of being in the zone do refer to genuine flow.
